The holiday season includes some of the most travel-heavy days of the year. While you may have some time off work while the kids are out of school towards the end of December, the germs in your mouth that cause gum disease and tooth decay will certainly not be taking any time off. If you’re hitting the road or catching a flight for the holidays, it’s important to keep your oral health in mind. Here are a few dental hygiene tips for while you are traveling.
Have a Dentist’s Appointment a Few Weeks Before You Leave
Nobody would enjoy the sudden onset of a toothache when they’re in the middle of driving across the country. The good news about dental problems is that they can usually be stopped easily in their early stages, so it’s a great idea to schedule a dentist appointment before you travel. This way, your dentist can correct any issues before they become massive problems. It’s best to schedule it a few weeks out in case you need to schedule a follow-up visit.
Keep a Clean Dental Hygiene Kit
Many people just throw their toothbrushes into their toiletry bags without much thought. Having a toothbrush covered in bacteria colonies is not the best thing for your dental health. It’s a great idea to thoroughly clean and disinfect your toiletries bag before you travel. Your kit should include a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash.
Take Proper Care of Your Toothbrush
It’s not a great idea to pack a toothbrush into a dark, enclosed area like your toiletries bag. If possible, let your toothbrush dry out as much as possible before you stow it away for the next leg of your travels. Always keep it in a case or toothbrush holder. When you get to your next stop, it’s a great idea to unpack your toothbrush first so you can clean it and let it air out.
If you want to avoid the hassle of keeping your toothbrush clean altogether, you might want to pack a number of disposable toothbrushes to take with you. These might not be as great as your normal toothbrush, but you won’t have to worry about keeping them clean.
Make sure you’re prepared for excellent oral hygiene when you’re getting ready for your big holiday trip. By keeping these tips in mind, you can keep your teeth looking great and in good health for your whole journey.
